ASSC is implementing some changes in how our program is run to increase engagement and allow for USC students to take on new leadership opportunities.
For 11 years, the majority of the program's administrative tasks have been managed by a very small team of dedicated individuals. While a small team can be efficient and reliable, we are looking for passionate and talented individuals to contribute small amounts of time, but large amounts of energy. By decentralizing operations we believe we can increase our reach while maintaining a high level of efficiency.
If you are interested in any of the positions below please send us a 2-4 sentence explanation of why you are the right man/woman for the job. Also please include any past experiences you have that may relate to your position of interest. Finally, attach a resume with a PHONE number and EMAIL address. Thanks!
Coaches
Our Coaches make up the majority of our team. Each semester for 8 weeks they go to one of nine different schools we work with and make sure 3-5th graders stay active and healthy after school, while keeping it fun. We offer Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Martial Arts, and Swimming, and are hiring coaches for all positions. They make $12/ hour and each after school session they teach is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Recruitment Team
1) ASSC Form Design Doctor): We are looking for an all star designer to take our registration process to the next level. Currently, we have a boring "bilingual" black and white permission slip. Compensation is $12/hour. If you are interested please make sure to include some example of previous design work with your resume.
2) Program Ambassador and Fitness Motivator (Program Promoter/ ASSC Healthy Life Recruiter/ Fitness and Health Life Promoter): Our team typically drops registration forms and permission slips off at the local elementary schools, occasionally speaking with a few classrooms. We are looking for a very outgoing and creative individual, who can not only walk comfortably into a classroom, but also command attention and motivate children to get off the couch and sign up for our 8 week after school sports program.
Since we're looking for someone who knows they can deliver success, this position will pay a lower base salary of $8/hr plus a bonus of $4/every child above our 2008-2009 attendance average (which was 30 children per school). If you recruit 6 more children per school. expect to take home an extra bonus of around $200...just for getting kids excited about playing sports.
3) Paperwork Prince (or Princess): We're expecting the Program Ambassador (see above) to drum up so much excitement for our program, that we won't know what to do with all of the paperwork. Who are we kidding, this job is not that exciting...BUT, the role of fast and accurate data entry is essential to our ability to take attendance, predict equipment needs and write reports (that ultimately bring in all of our generous grant money). This is a vital aspect of our program that requires someone who is either passionate about challenges, or passionate about helping make this youth sports programs a reality.
Accuracy, speed, humility and GREAT attention to detail are desired...expect to work about 4 hours, a $100 stipend will be awarded to this team member.
Operations Team
1) Equipment Controller- ASSC has storage space at all 9 facilities that needs to be stocked and then maintained throughout the program. Even though the schools are all within walking distance this person should have a car to help with dropping off or picking up. Compensation is $12/hour.
2) Schedule Master- ASSC's Schedule Master is in charge of matching our class times with our coaches availability. The schedule will be set before the session begins, but as the semester progresses it inevitably shifts and needs to be updated. Compensation is $12/hour.
While all of our positions are critical, this is one position where failure is not an option. When positions open up, typically we dip into our "reserves", which requires phone calls, emails, text messages, etc.., but expect the pressure to rise a few days when the stars are aligned against the program...we need someone who is capable of stepping up to those challenges to get the shift scheduled with a trained instructor...no matter what it takes.
Expected time commitment: 20 hours to set the initial schedule, then 5 hours per week...occasionally ramping up or ramping down as needed.
Bonus opportunity: Fill 100% of the initial shifts on time with
qualified instructors, and get an extra $100. Achieve 5 or fewer
missed shifts during our 9 week program and receive $200. If a 6th
shift is missed, sorry, the bonus is lost...trust us when we say we are
rooting for your success and that we will give you every tool at our
disposal to succeed. Missed shifts are very embarrassing for our
program.
3) Talent Scout (2)- "You must be a great judge of character!"
This role is for people who feel comfortable evaluating USC students
and their ability to responsibly control and teach a specific sport to
a class of 3rd-5th graders. To get the ball rolling, we will post 5
days of Facebook ads and fliers all round the Lyon Center. Applicants
can apply online at our website www.uscassc.com. We welcome ALL other creative means to identify and attract the best people for the job.
Once responses start flowing in the talent Scout identifies top talent and recruits them to coach in our program. This individual will either formally, or informally, evaluate ALL of our applicants in 2 ways:
1) Using a multi-faceted quantitative evaluation, and
2) by facilitating a 1-3 minute interview, which is recorded using our brand new digital video camera.
Your recommendations must reach our desk on schedule, and our management team will likely (hopefully) agree with 90%+ of your recommendations.
Compensation is $12/hr for time spent evaluating resumes and conducting interviews, plus $5 per sourced coach that ends up working with us for the 8 week fall semester. An evaluation will take place after the new candidates complete their second week, and a discretionary bonus of $0-$200 will be awarded. We'll be upfront in saying that you will really have to WOW us to earn more than a $50 bonus. Satisfactory work (as with many of these positions) will however get you invited back in the Spring to take another crack at the full bonus (or maybe you are like us and will be hoping to get invited back for the joy of helping the kids).
Interested in payroll budgeting, international business or management? Working on the financial side of our organization is like working for a dynamic international business. Gain experience helping our team manage payroll and accounting. Some accounting or payroll experience desired...but not required. Tasks include basic accounting, zero-based budgeting, event budgeting, updating the "rolling budget" and mailing checks.
Require time commitment: 2 hours per week, scheduled in-office work...for 8-10 weeks.
Extra-curricular Activities and other unique opportunities:
1) ASSC Historian (2 weekly responsibilities). The Historian
is responsible for taking at least 100 photos per week at at least 4
different locations (we have 10 total). Those photos must be uploaded to our website and Facebook account...tagging individuals when
appropriate. Compensation is $12/hour.
2) ASSC Parent Involvement Coordinator
1 - Devise a strategy for parent involvement, execute that strategy. The central goal of which is to build a support base of at least 500 parents interested in youth sports (ideally as many parents of our program participants as possible)
2 - Attend as many parent events as possible to inform parents of our goals and get them registered on our website and/or mailing list
3 - Write a weekly 1 page newsletter covering updates about the After School Sports Connection, scheduling changes, and any health issues that impact the local community (especially youth).
Qualifications: (bilingual, english + spanish, excellent ability to communicate and connect with parents, ties to the local community are a plus, but not required)
Compensation for this position is $20/hour, working about one hour per week for 10 weeks.
